About Us

A scenic view of the Elks Golf Course landscape.
A scenic view of the Elks Golf Course landscape.

The Elks Golf Course on Country Club Rd sits at the edge of Elkins where the Allegheny highlands start to roll in earnest. This is a working course, not a resort photo op, and regulars who have played it over the past few years will tell you it has genuinely improved, hole by hole, season by season.

Flooding from the nearby terrain has tested holes 6 and 7 repeatedly, and the grounds crew has fought back each time. That ongoing battle is part of what makes this place honest. You are not paying for perfection; you are paying for a course that takes the mountain environment seriously and keeps showing up.

The layout plays as a nine-hole course with distinct tee box color codes that let you mix up the yardage for a full 18-hole round. Match the tee box color to the scorecard before you tee off and you will avoid confusion. It is a quirky system, but once you crack it the course opens up in a satisfying way.

What We Offer

The course offers nine holes with multiple tee box configurations, giving players the flexibility to run a second loop with different yardages for a complete 18-hole experience. The color-coded tee system rewards golfers who read the scorecard carefully, adding a small layer of strategy before the round even begins.

A clubhouse sits on the property for post-round needs. Golfers should note that service experiences have varied, so arriving with your own pace and expectations set accordingly will serve you best. The course is a solid choice for mountain-town golf at a scale that fits a casual weekday round or a relaxed weekend outing with friends.

Elkins, WV sits within striking distance of Monongahela National Forest, which means the backdrop for your round is genuine Appalachian scenery. Bring extra balls for the water-influenced lower holes and plan your approach on 6 and 7 with conditions in mind.

"This golf course has come a long way in the past 3 years of playing at this course. Their constant battle with flooding has left hole 6 and 7 in a shape that is not up to everyone's standards, but they fight to keep it as best as possible, and it is appreciated. The fairways are looking great, the carts are very reliable, and the greens are in really good shape...and difficult on a few."

"It's a nine hole course with different tee boxes if you want to go around again for 18 holes. The tee boxes have a strange color coding that you need to match up with the score card to play the correct tees (men's, women's, seniors, etc.). The tee boxes are not well maintained. A majority are lumpy, and the grass is long enough that you will need extra long tees to get the ball above the grass. On the positive side, if you enjoy mountain style golf, the elevation changes, fairway contours, and small greens are beautiful and challenging."

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a 9-hole or 18-hole course?

The Elks Golf Course is a 9-hole layout, but it offers different tee box options so you can play a second loop with varied yardages and essentially complete an 18-hole round. Check the scorecard for the color-coded tee system before you start.

How does the tee box color coding work?

Each tee box is marked with a color that corresponds to a specific yardage set on the scorecard. Match your chosen tee box color to the correct column on the scorecard before each hole. It can seem confusing at first, but it becomes straightforward once you see how the card is laid out.

Are holes 6 and 7 currently playable?

Yes, both holes are playable. The course has dealt with recurring flooding on those holes and has made ongoing improvements. Conditions can vary depending on recent rainfall, so expect some irregularity compared to the rest of the course and plan your shots accordingly.

Where exactly is the course located?

The Elks Golf Course is located at 1130 Country Club Rd, Elkins, WV 26241. It sits on the outskirts of Elkins near the Allegheny highlands.

Do I need to be an Elks Lodge member to play?

Based on available information, the course is accessible to visiting golfers. It is always a good idea to call ahead or stop by the clubhouse to confirm current access policies and any guest fee requirements before your round.

What is the best time of year to play?

Late spring through early fall tends to offer the most stable conditions at mountain elevation in West Virginia. Summer rounds benefit from cooler temperatures than lower-elevation courses, though afternoon storms are common. Early morning tee times are a smart choice.

Is there a pro shop or equipment rental available?

A clubhouse is on the property, but specific pro shop inventory and rental availability are not confirmed. Contact the course directly before your visit if you need rental clubs or specific gear.
